Learning the rules of Texas hold’em is fairly easy. Learning to play well is fairly difficult. This is because the game is far more complex than “Whoever has the best hand wins.” Texas hold’em, especially no limit Texas hold’em, is all about betting. Without betting, Texas hold’em and in fact all poker would quickly lose its entertainment value.

The question then becomes, how much to bet? In limit forms of poker this is not an issue, since the betting limits are pre-established. In pot limit and no limit poker, there are few or no restrictions on how much you can bet, which makes understanding bet sizes crucial.

Betting Against Draws

In general, you should bet just enough to give your opponent incorrect pot odds to call. Pot odds are the odds the pot is laying you if you win. For example if you need to call $5 to win $50, the pot is laying you 50-to-5 or 10-to-1 pot odds. Therefore if you believe you have a better than 10-to-1 chance to win the pot, meaning you will win it more than one time out of eleven tries, you should play. This being the case, if you believe that your opponent is drawing to a hand that he has a 4-to-1 chance to hit, you should bet enough that he is getting something like 3-to-1 pot odds. The idea is not to force him out, but make it tempting enough for him to make a bad call.

Betting to Bluff

Sometimes the situation will be more complicated than just a made hand against a draw. If you are trying to bluff an opponent, you need to bet enough so that he will be facing a very difficult situation even if he has a decent hand. If you raise the minimum your opponent is often getting correct pot odds to call on the off chance that you are bluffing. If you bet too much, an opponent may get suspicious, but it still may be too dangerous for him to call.

Betting for Value

If you want a call, you’ll have to determine what the right bet size is to suck in this particular player. This will depend on a number of factors including the type of opponent you are facing and what you and this opponent have done on previous hands. It will not be an exact calculation and will not be easy to determine, but that is where the skill in no limit poker comes into play.
