Sit & go tournaments

Sit and go are small tournaments that start when the table is full. Mostly these tournaments are played with 6 or 10 players. That makes them suitable for online poker. It does not take long to find a tournament to play. At the larger poker rooms you will have no trouble finding tournaments from a few dollars up to several hundred dollars.

There are a lot of different variations of sit and go tournaments. You could beside the more normal tournaments play qualifiers to larger tournaments, speed or turbo tournaments, jackpot or double your money tournaments. So when you sit down to play you should first of all figure out what tournament it is, how the price money is divided and how fast the blinds are increasing. All those factors should have an impact on what strategy you choose. You should also try to find out what type of sit and go tournament that suits you the best. If you find a tournament structure that you master you will find yourself winning a lot of money with a limited bankroll. But do not get to eager to move up in buy in levels. Instead find your comfort zone and excel!

Strategy

Like in all other poker variations there are different types of strategy to become a long term winning player at sit and go. It depends on your strength and weaknesses. Our belief is that it is one strategy that is better than others in Sit and Go tournaments.

We advocate a rather tight play until a lot of players got eliminated. The reason is that the chips are not really worth anything (and one chip lost are more worth than one chip won). It is to finish ITM that pays you. So your main concern is to stay alive and get into the money. To stay out of trouble means to not waste chips by chasing long shot straights or flushes. Instead play premium hands and try to win some chips.

After a while you should try to loosen up. This could be when it comes down to maybe 5 players. At a ten handed game top 3 wins the money. If people are playing tight you could put in some action and try to accumulate some chips when you are in the middle rounds. But be aware if there are other good sit and go players at your table they probably will try to do the same thing. If the table all of a sudden has a lot of action, you could still sit back and wait for the others to beat each other. Remember that in a tournament you do not need to eliminate a single player except the player finishing second to win.

If you get short stacked you should not wait too long to take a shot at a pot. If the blinds are increasing and your chip count is low you should gamble with some decent cards as soon as possible. If you wait too long you will not get helped by doubling up. You know 0 times 2 is equal with 0. If you get eliminated (which even the best sit and go players will in maybe 50% of the tournaments they play) that is ok. You have done what you could and can buy in to a new one. If you succeed to win a few pots you will soon be back in the game for real and can slow down somewhat and again stay away from trouble and aim for the money.

When you reached the money you have secured some money. Then you should focus on first place since the price structure often pays a significant amount more to the winner than to the player finishing second.
